Grant and Blair Hinkle
Was there something in the water? My mother, who we call Grandma Sue, is our poker matriarch and she has always played a mean game of Go Fish! She taught the grandkids how to play competitive cards, and it has finally paid off. Two of my four boys have won poker tournaments, and World Series of Poker bracelets. Grant, my oldest (28), won more than $800,000 in Las Vegas this summer and I watched until 4:40 a.m. as he brilliantly managed the final table to win Event 2 of the World Series of Poker. Not to be outdone, Blair (22) won over half a million dollars in WSOP Event 23 exactly ten days later at the Rio in Vegas. Now Mason, a freshman in college, spends time online learning Texas Hold ‘em when he isn’t perfecting his golf game at college, and Taylor is happily playing basketball as a Junior at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, and won $9 at a final table online.
ESPN did a two hour show about Grant’s event, since it drew nearly 4,000 entrants. We watched it in Hilton Head at the home of John and Nancy Cronin, Grant’s in-laws, and heard from people all over the nation who knew the family and were happy for Grant and Kim. In another stroke of luck, Grant and Kim attended his 10-year high school reunion just a few weeks after the ESPN debut!
